Terracing and Soil Conservation

Terraces, contour bunds, grass strips and waterways that stop soil erosion on sloping farmland.

About Terracing and Soil Conservation

Terracing and Soil Conservation

On hillsides, rain washes away fertile topsoil and gullies form. We set out contour lines and build terraces, bunds, cut-off drains and grassed waterways so that water is slowed and led away safely, and the soil stays on the farm.

What we do

  • Contour survey of the slopes
  • Layout of terraces, bunds or banks along the contour
  • Construction by machine or hand labour
  • Cut-off drains and waterways with safe outlets
  • Planting of grass strips or trees to stabilise structures
  • Maintenance advice

What we need from you to quote

  • Farm location, area and the steepness of the slope
  • Current erosion problems such as gullies or washed-out fields
  • Soil type and crops grown or planned
  • Where runoff can be safely discharged
  • Whether the land borders streams, roads or neighbours
  • Whether labour will be community-based or contracted
